The passing of Brother Valentino is a heartbreaking loss to Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and the wider Caribbean. Known as The People’s Calypsonian, the Grenadian born, Trinidad and Tobago raised bard used his melodious voice, valiant lyrics, and provocative social commentary to speak for the ordinary man and challenge injustice. Through memorable songs such as Life Is a Stage, Ethiopia Will Rise Again, Stay Up Zimbabwe and de Roaring ’70s (an editorial on the people’s revolution in Trinidad at the time), he left an indelible mark on the art of calypso. His passing leaves a void in our cultural heritage, but his music, message, and legacy will continue to inspire generations. Rest in peace, Brother Valentino. Your voice may be silent, but your kaiso will live forever.
